Official Description:
Welcome to the brutal and elite world of Basgiath War College . . .
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general - also known as her tough-as-talons mother - has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you're smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away . . . because dragons don't bond to 'fragile' humans. They incinerate them.
With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother's daughter - like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.
She'll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise. Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.
Everyone at Basgiath has an agenda, and every night could be your last. So, sleep with one eye open because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.

#1: First thoughts fourth wing review
"Fourth Wing" by Rebecca Yarros holds a special place in my heart as it reignited my passion for the fantasy romance genre. After exploring various books over the years, this novel captivated me to the point where I became immersed in the genre, devouring a book a day in the following months.
What initially drew me into "Fourth Wing" was the Academia theme, reminiscent of my youth spent reading Harry Potter. The challenges, relationships, and friendships within the academic setting provide an ideal backdrop for character development. Surprisingly, some reviews compare "Fourth Wing" to bestsellers like Hunger Games and Fifty Shades of Grey, I find such comparisons to be far from accurate.
Rebecca Yarros skillfully constructs an intricate world with its own magic and political system, avoiding the need for an extensive glossary or lengthy descriptions (thank god).
The story unfolds at Basgiath War College, a place where survival is not guaranteed, and every day could be one's last. Violet Sorrengail, our courageous protagonist, finds herself thrust into the world of dragon riders against her wishes. Despite being labeled as 'too small and frail,' Violet must navigate the treacherous waters of the Riders Quadrants, all while dealing with the weight of her mother's controversial legacy as General of Basgiath. Enter Xaden Riorson, the enigmatic and ruthless wingleader whose vendetta against Violet adds a layer of tension and complexity to the narrative.
Yarros expertly crafts a world filled with intrigue, magic, and political maneuvering. The war college setting provides a captivating backdrop for the unfolding drama, while the concept of dragon riders adds an exhilarating element to the story. From the first page to the last, readers will find themselves fully immersed in this richly imagined world, eagerly devouring each twist and turn of the plot.
#2: Romance & Tension
At the core of "Fourth Wing" lies a captivating romance between Violet and Xaden. The enemies-to-lovers dynamic authentically contributes to the story's complexity, unraveling the intricacies of their relationship and mutual mistrust. Yarros adeptly navigates their emotional journey, balancing passion with vulnerability, creating a believable and dynamic love story that will leave readers swooning.
Violet Sorrengail emerges as a relatable and determined heroine, her journey marked by authenticity and depth. Yarros breaks away from the typical portrayal of fantasy heroines, depicting Violet with self-doubt, insecurities, and vulnerability, making her character development more poignant.
Xaden Riorson, the scarred anti-hero, adds depth to the narrative with his hidden complexities (and secrets?). Supporting characters like Rhiannon and Liam contribute to the found family dynamic, enriching the story with loyalty and camaraderie.
Despite only a couple of steamy scenes (which were a chefs-kiss), the tension throughout the book is palpable. Yarros skillfully portrays the gradual development of love, allowing readers to fall in love alongside the characters.
#3: The Power of Bonds
One of my highlights of "Fourth Wing" is the enchanting relationship between riders and dragons. After enduring the death-defying challenges of the College, students are presented with the opportunity to bond with dragons. It's the dragon that chooses its rider, and once this bond forms, the rider's magical abilities manifest.
Rebecca Yarros intricately explores the concept of bonding, providing it with the complexity and depth it deserves. This authenticity enhances the power and significance of these bonds, making them the strongest relationships in the realm. Beyond powering "signets" or magical abilities, these bonds connect the lives of riders and dragons through mind and feelings.
The author's treatment of the bond concept sets "Fourth Wing" apart in my opinion, avoiding the inflationary use of the term seen in many fantasy books. The depth and authenticity added to these connections make them a powerful and integral element of the story.
#4: Final thoughts
Yarros's writing is both evocative and engaging, drawing readers into the story with its vivid descriptions and emotional resonance. Whether it's the adrenaline-fueled action sequences or the tender moments of connection between characters, the prose shines, bringing the world of "Fourth Wing" to life in vivid detail.
While the story may follow some familiar tropes, particularly within the fantasy genre, Yarros infuses them with fresh twists and turns that keep the narrative feeling vibrant and original. The pacing is brisk, ensuring that readers are kept on the edge of their seats from beginning to end.
Overall, "Fourth Wing" is a spellbinding journey that will captivate fans of fantasy and romance alike. With its compelling characters, immersive world-building, and heart-pounding romance, this book is a must-read for anyone seeking an epic tale of love, courage, and adventure. Rebecca Yarros has crafted a masterful story that will linger in the minds of readers long after the final page is turned.
